Your Travel Checklist For a Romantic Break in Marrakesh
The North African country of Morocco is a popular destination for
international tourists and the capital of Marrakesh is one of the main tourist
destinations. Drawn by its warm weather, its beautiful architecture, its lively
atmosphere and its excellent cuisine, thousands of these vacationers are here
to enjoy a magical getaway with others.
You might want to spend a long weekend with a girlfriend or a
boyfriend, escape an exciting honeymoon adventure or celebrate a special
birthday. Whatever the occasion, here are our top five essential elements to
embrace the culture of Marrakesh and spend some quality time together.
1. Sample some street food at Jemaa el-Fnaa
The main square in Marrakesh is renowned for its activity and
its excellent location for people watching. The best time to visit it in the
evening when the stalls light up and you can see local people and tourists
haggle with merchants for clothes, souvenirs and local products. If you're not
in the mood for browsing, at least try some of the excellent street food
options or try some mint tea from one of the restaurants on the square's edge
if you prefer to hang back.
2. Experience a souk
Souks are the traditional markets of Morocco, and a must-see
when you’re visiting Marrakesh. Between the narrow passages and bustling
stalls, you’ll find snake charmers, magicians, folk singers and street artists,
creating a noisy, vibrant atmosphere that’s packed with life and energy.
You can't buy anything from traditional Moroccan clothing,
jewelry, bags and perfumes to local meats, vegetables, spices and beverages.
Musical instruments, decorated pieces of furniture, handcrafted homeware and
large carpets are also available. As long as you are able to cope with the
crowds and chaos that weave deep into the Medinas, a trip to the souk will be
an exciting experience. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your
visit.
3. Scope out dinner with a view
If
you feel overwhelmed by the Medina markets, it's time to escape to a more
isolated spot and book a table in one of the many cafes and restaurants in
Marrakech. You will probably have a flat roof and a private restaurant in your
hotel or riad, but you can find plenty more dotted around the town. With stunning
views of the surrounding towers and streets, these outdoor terraces are the
perfect place to relax with a glass of wine and a romantic two-person dinner.
4.
Visit a hammam
Another
way to embrace a slower life is to visit a local hammam or a bathhouse. These
are a central part of life in Marrakech, and it is a weekly ritual for many to
swim, wash in rhassoul clay soap and have a rigorous body scrub. Although some
of the more state-of - the-art hotels have a private spa and hammam, the
experience is very different from a public one.
5.
Escape the city and find a beach
With all its magical culture
and stunning architecture, it’s understandable if you choose to spend every
moment of your holiday within the Marrakesh city limits. However, if you can
muster up the desire to venture further afield, you’ll be handsomely rewarded.
Some of the world's most beautiful beach resorts are only a few
hours away, such as the old port town of Essaouira, which is a popular
destination. This is partly due to its arty, bohemian atmosphere, but also the
incredible seafood, beautiful beach and the fact that it appeared in Game of
Thrones as a location (Astapor)–check out some of the others here.
Try Al-Hoecima, one of the most prestigious beaches in Morocco
for a longer trip. It's 9 hours from Marrakech, but it offers fantastic beaches
and a thriving tourist and local scene. Rent a beach house for a couple of
days, and you will be happy to make the effort.
